Open Comment to „The Trump dream of balanced trade“ in „Real-World Economics Review Blog“

I have commented with this there:

„I think the question is when a deficit becomes harmful and to whom. From the perspective of the country as a whole, it is more about avoiding dependencies (Beverly J. Silver, foreign Forces of Labor (workers unrest) – maybe instrumentalized by foreign powers -) or excessive future obligations (So that one can be forced from outside to pay one’s debts according to their rules).

As long as a state remains at least a co-alpha power in all power categories (technology, control of global financial markets, access to global raw materials, communications and media control, weapons of mass destruction) according to Samir Amin, it can stand (or use) a considerable deficit.

The question is also to what extent Trump simply wants to outdo a „tax the rich“ mood with a „tax the foreign“ or „balance foreign trade“ mood.“
